Your first shoppable image, step by step

Turn any photo into a shoppable image: product hotspots with the price, options and Add to cart, right on the picture. Create a section, place the hotspots, add a phone crop, choose where it shows and add the block to your theme.

  • Place product hotspots and pick each product from your catalog
  • Add a separate phone image and crop it; the pins move with the crop
  • Add the app block to your theme from the “Theme block missing” notice, once
  • Set the block’s top and bottom padding in the theme editor

0:00 · Create a section Let’s turn a photo into a shoppable image, step by step. Four steps, no code. Open Hotspot Studio in your Shopify admin, and click Create section. You get a new, unsaved section. Nothing goes live until you publish. Give it a name you’ll recognize. Then add a photo. Upload one, or pick one from your store’s files. Room shots with a few clear products work best.

0:29 · Place hotspots Click a product in your photo. A small menu asks what the hotspot is: a product, a collection, a note, or a link. Choose Product, then pick it from your catalog. Search for it, tick the box, and click Add. The pin lands where you clicked, and the live preview shows the popup your shoppers will see. Add a pin for every product in the photo. Each pin opens its own product, with its price and options. To fine-tune a spot, drag the pin, or nudge it with your arrow keys. Phones get their own pin positions, so check the Mobile preview too. Next, let’s choose what the popup shows.

1:15 · Popup details Click a pin to edit it. Tick View product, and shoppers get a button to the full product page. Then choose a description. Product description uses the text you already wrote in Shopify. The live preview shows exactly what your shoppers will see.

1:35 · Phone image & crop Phones show the same photo, unless you add one just for them. Under Media, add a phone image. Here, it’s the same room photo. Click Crop, pick a square, and drag the frame to keep the products in view. Apply crop saves it as a new image. The original stays in your files. Your pins move with the crop, so they stay on the products. Check them in the Mobile preview.

2:01 · Choose where it shows Now save the section. Saving unlocks assigning and publishing. Next, choose where it shows. Collections, pages, blog posts and the home page are all in this list. For product pages, click Assign products, find the product, tick the box, and click Add.

2:17 · Publish The section appears on those product pages automatically. Click Publish now. Your section is published. The first time, there’s one more step.

2:33 · Add to theme If your theme doesn’t have the Hotspot Studio block yet, this yellow notice tells you. Click Add block in theme editor. The theme editor opens on your product, with the block already added. It lands at the bottom of the page. Drag it up, under the product details. There’s nothing to fill in. The block shows the section assigned to each product by itself. Need space above or below it? Set Top and Bottom under Padding. Left and right padding is in your style preset, under Layout. Click Save. Back in the app, the notice is gone. You only do this once for your product pages.

3:16 · See it live Open the product page, and there is your shoppable image. Shoppers click a pin to see the product, its description, and the View product button. On phones, they get the square photo you cropped. That is your first shoppable image.

Shop the Look: the whole photo in the cart in one click

One button opens every product in your photo, and Add all to cart buys the whole look in one click. Turn it on, pick one of four views and decide how the look behaves on phones.

  • The look follows your hotspots, or choose the products yourself
  • Four views: Product picker, Panel on the image, Straight to the cart, Beside the image
  • On phones the panel shows as a slider or a list, and the list beside the image as a row of cards to swipe
  • Phone layouts live in the style preset, so every section that uses it changes too

0:00 · Turn on Shop the Look Shop the Look lets shoppers buy the whole look at once. Here is how to set it up. Open a section with product hotspots, and go to the Shop the Look tab. Switch it on. The preview shows the look: every product from your hotspots, with an Add all to cart button. The list follows your hotspots. Drag to change the order, or choose the products yourself. Click Save, then Publish changes.

0:28 · On your store On your store, a Shop the look button sits on the photo. It opens every piece with its options, and one button adds them all. On phones, the look opens over the page.

0:41 · Choose a view Next, choose how shoppers see the look. Panel on the image opens the cards right over the photo. Straight to the cart skips the list. One click adds everything. Beside the image keeps the products next to the photo, always in view. Here is the panel on your store, and the list beside the image.

1:06 · Panel on phones: slider or list Phones get their own layout. Here, the panel turns into a slider of cards. To change it, click the style gear on the Shop the Look card. Open Each view, pick Panel on the image, and switch the preview to a phone. Under On phones, choose List, then click Save to preset. Now phones show the panel as a list.

1:28 · Beside the image on phones Beside the image puts the list under the photo on phones. In Each view, pick Beside the image, and set On phones to Slider. Save to preset, and phones get a row of cards to swipe. The setting lives in the style preset, so every section that uses it changes too.

Side padding for a section stuck to the screen edges

Is your section touching the edges of the screen? It happens on some themes, or when the section is set to full width in the theme editor. The fix is side padding in your style preset, for computers and phones separately.

  • Open the style preset from your section: the pencil next to Style preset
  • Layout → Section padding: Left and right for computers and tablets, Left and right on phones for screens up to 749 px
  • Save, and the change goes live on every section that uses the preset
  • Need space above or below? Use the block’s Padding in the theme editor

0:00 · Spot the problem When a section runs right up to the edges of the screen, side padding fixes it. Here is how. On some themes, or with a section set to full width, the image reaches the very edge of the page. On computers, the photo touches the left edge, and the button touches the right. On phones, there is no space on either side. Here, the theme editor sets this section’s width to Full.

0:26 · Add side padding Open your section, and click the pencil next to its style preset. In Layout, find Section padding. Left and right is for computers and tablets. Forty pixels matches this theme. Left and right on phones works up to 749 pixels wide. Sixteen is a good start. Click Save. It goes live on every section that uses this preset.

0:52 · Check your store On computers, the section now lines up with the rest of the page. On phones, it keeps a small margin on both sides. Need space above or below? Use the block’s Padding in the theme editor. That is it. No more sections stuck to the edges.

Show a section anywhere: products, collections, pages and blog posts

Give each product its own section, cover a whole collection or every page of a template, or put a section on a page, the home page or right inside a blog post — and see how each placement looks on the store.

  • A product’s own section always comes first
  • A collection’s section shows on the collection page and on the product pages of everything in it
  • “Show on every page with this template” covers every product without a section of its own
  • In a blog post, pick a section without a side list so it fits the narrow column, and turn on “Embeds in pages & posts” once per theme

0:00 · A product A section can show anywhere in your store: on a product, a whole collection, every page of a template, a regular page, the home page, or right inside a blog post. Here is how. Open your section and find Where it’s shown. Every section has its own list of products. Open Products: this one is already on the sofa. Click Assign products. Search for the product, select it, click Add, and confirm. That product page now shows the section too. A different product can show a different section, like this chair with its bedroom look. A product’s own section always comes first.

0:42 · A collection To show it on a collection, open Collections and click Assign collections. Find the collection, select it, click Add, and confirm. The section shows on the collection page, and on the product pages of everything in it, unless a product has a section of its own.

0:59 · Every page of a template Want one section on every product page instead? Open Anywhere else and pick the Product pages template. Tick Show on every page with this template, and confirm. Now every product page without a section of its own shows it.

1:17 · A page To show it on a page, open Pages and click Assign pages. Pick the page, click Assign, and confirm. This page’s template doesn’t have the Hotspot Studio block yet, so a yellow notice appears. Click Add block in theme editor. The theme editor opens with the block already added. Click Save. Back in the app, the notice is gone, and the page shows your section.

1:46 · The home page For the home page, tick Show on the home page, and confirm. This home page already has the block, so the section shows right away. If yours doesn’t, you get the same yellow notice.

1:59 · Inside a blog post For a blog post, pick a section without a side list, so it fits the narrow column. Open Anywhere else, and click Embed in page or blog post content. Once per theme, turn on Embeds in pages and posts. The button opens the theme editor with it switched on. Just click Save. Back in the app, click Copy snippet. Open the blog post, click Show HTML, paste the snippet where the section should go, and save. The section shows right inside the post.
