Each app, honestly
Byte Lookbook & Shop The Look — the category veteran
Running since 2017 with a perfect 5.0 across 114 reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. One free tier (a single lookbook) and one premium tier at $19/mo that includes an onboarding call, 24/7 live chat and a “Complete Look Discount” feature. Choose it if you want the most established name in the niche, prefer a single all-in plan over a ladder, and value hands-on onboarding.
Lookfy Lookbook: Image Gallery — variety on a budget
The biggest review base after Essential Grid (4.8 · 201) with the broadest layout menu — row, carousel, masonry, list, shop-the-look, grid — plus bulk photo upload and a four-tier ladder starting at $5.99/mo. Choose it if you want many gallery styles cheaply and photo volume matters more than selling mechanics.
EM Lookbook Gallery — the long-runner
In the store since 2016 (4.9 · 154), with simple gallery-count pricing from $4.99/mo and product tagging from the Pro tier. No analytics are claimed on the listing. Choose it if you want straightforward lookbooks from a long-standing app at the lowest entry price in the field.
Essential Grid Gallery — the media multitool
The largest review count in the group (4.9 · 203) and the widest media surface: image grids, shoppable video (YouTube Shorts, Reels, Shopify-hosted), Instagram feeds and lookbook tagging in one app, with 80+ templates. Its Standard plan lists “Gallery Analytics: Clicks, Cart & Orders”. Choose it if you want one app to cover video, Instagram and galleries together rather than a dedicated hotspot tool.
Spot Layer: Image Hotspots — the focused newcomer
The closest philosophical neighbor to Hotspot Studio: hotspot-first, Built for Shopify, 5.0 across its first 6 reviews, with multilingual hotspot translation and a Premium analytics dashboard (per-hotspot interactions, CTR, trends, CSV). No free plan — paid from $7/mo with a 14-day trial. Choose it if you want a lean hotspot tool and don’t need a free tier or bundle selling.
Shop the look ‑ Ace — the simple look builder
A dedicated look tool (5.0 · 30, since 2018): popup or inline display, multi-product add-to-cart, click and add-to-cart counters, with pricing that scales by number of looks — free for 5, from $7.99/mo beyond. Choose it if you need simple outfit blocks and a gentle upgrade path priced by volume.
Hotspot Studio — built for the gaps in this table
Our own entry — launching on the App Store in 2026. We built it around the four columns nothing else in the table claims: revenue attribution in dollars per section and per hotspot (refunds subtract automatically), per-device images with independent hotspot coordinates for the mobile crop, per-variant targeting that swaps the gallery in place when a shopper changes color, and native bundle discounts applied at checkout by a Shopify Functions discount — not a simulated saving. The free plan includes three full sections with complete styling, and paid plans run $7.99–$29.99/mo with 7-day trials. See the full feature list or pricing — and judge us against the same table.
Five questions that pick the right app
Does it sell in place?
A popup with live price, variants and add-to-cart beats a link to the product page. Every hop you add costs conversions.
Can it prove revenue?
Click counts say a gallery is interesting; only order attribution says it earns money. Ask what the analytics actually measure.
What happens on phones?
“Responsive” means the desktop image shrinks. A separate mobile crop with its own hotspot positions is a different — and better — thing.
Are discounts real?
A set deal should be an automatic Shopify discount at checkout with stacking you control — not a banner promising a saving the cart doesn’t apply.
Can you evaluate it free?
A free tier big enough for a real test (not one crippled gallery) plus a clean uninstall means you can judge with your own traffic before paying.
What does it cost to load?
Check the script weight and loading strategy — a gallery that drags your speed score down pays for itself in lost conversions elsewhere.
Choosing, answered
Which Shop the Look app is best for Shopify?
It depends on the job. For an established premium single-tier app with hands-on onboarding, Byte Lookbook is the category veteran. For layout variety on a budget, Lookfy and Essential Grid lead. For a hotspot-first tool with measurable results — revenue attribution, per-device images, per-variant galleries and native bundle discounts — that’s the gap Hotspot Studio was built to fill.
Is there a free Shop the Look app?
Most apps in the niche have a free tier, usually capped at one gallery or a handful of looks. Hotspot Studio’s free plan includes three full sections with complete styling; Byte, Lookfy, EM Lookbook, Essential Grid and Ace cap their free tiers at one lookbook/gallery or five looks; Spot Layer has no free plan.
What does the Built for Shopify badge mean?
It’s Shopify’s own quality certification — apps must meet performance, design and integration standards plus merchant-adoption thresholds. Most established apps in this niche carry it. New apps become eligible only after accumulating installs and reviews, so a missing badge on a recently launched app reflects age, not necessarily quality.
Why should I trust a comparison written by one of the vendors?
Fair question — we build Hotspot Studio and say so at the top. Every factual claim in the table was checked against each app’s public App Store listing on July 27, 2026, competitors’ strengths are stated plainly, and where a listing is ambiguous we say “unspecified” instead of assuming the worst. Verify anything in five minutes: the listings are all public.
